Councillor Roz Cheesman
In 1981, I relocated to Downswood with my husband, daughter, and son. Shortly after settling in, I faced a challenging bout of MS. Once I regained my mobility and ability to drive, I became actively involved in the community by attending Otham Parish Council Meetings, where I was soon appointed as a co-opted member. Following changes by the Boundary Commission in 1987, I was elected to serve on the newly established Downswood Parish Council.
Throughout my tenure as a Parish Councillor, I've acquired a diverse set of skills and extensive knowledge, dedicating myself to enhancing the well-being of Downswood residents. Notable achievements include collaborating with local residents on initiatives such as the creation of the Len Valley Walk from Maidstone to Lenham through the joint effort of the Len Valley Action Group. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in the Anti KIG Campaign, where I spoke at a lengthy inquiry that ultimately led to the rejection of planning permission. I find equal satisfaction in smaller accomplishments, such as the installation of outdoor fitness equipment and addressing environmental concerns through collaboration with various agencies, ensuring Downswood's continued prosperity.
Beyond my responsibilities as a Parish Councillor, I am deeply passionate about croquet, music, nature, and the countryside. In the spirit of community involvement, I have served as a committee member for the school PTA and co-founded both Downswood's Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and Babysitting Circle.
My professional background spans various roles, including positions at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School Reference Library, NHS Hospital X-Ray Department, Social Services, and a housing development company. In the private sector, I worked as a Practice Manager, Medical Secretary, and Personal Assistant to several Consultant ENT Surgeons, culminating in the same to a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmic Surgeon.
