Spot Light on the The Facts

15th April 2025

It is regrettable that misinformation continues to circulate on social media regarding the recent tree works at Spot Lane Nature Reserve. Misplaced blame has once again been directed toward Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) contractors and Downswood Parish Council (DPC). This is categorically incorrect.

As public representatives, we have consistently stated: if residents seek accurate information, DPC is always willing to clarify. Where we do not have an immediate answer, we will investigate and provide the facts.

DPC and MBC have been working collaboratively with Natural England—the statutory authority on nature recovery—to develop a balanced, long-term five-year plan to protect and restore the ecological value of the Spot Lane area.

Only recently, members of DPC met with MBC’s Parks and Open Spaces Manager on-site to discuss ongoing concerns and to review the progress of our nature recovery efforts.

During this visit, we encountered Kent County Council (KCC) contractors undertaking urgent tree works. It is important to clarify that these works were not initiated by MBC and took place without prior consultation. However, under current regulations, KCC is permitted to undertake such works without planning permission.

The tree removal was necessary due to serious safety concerns. The tree in question posed an immediate risk to public safety, with the potential to cause injury or worse.

While this rationale has been communicated previously on this site, it is deeply disappointing to see misinformation continuing to circulate. We urge residents to approach DPC directly with any concerns or questions—transparency and engagement remain at the heart of our community leadership.

Looking ahead, we will be seeking further consultation with KCC to understand their strategy for nature recovery in the area and ensure future works are in line with the broader environmental goals for Spot Lane Nature Reserve.
