Congratulations

Congratulations to Thomas Thorndycraft for winning the Maidstone Borough Council litter picker of the year award last week. Thomas and others can be seen regularly around Downswood keeping the area clean. Litter picking sounds , well, just so simple but it has remarkable effects.

Regular litter picking in Downswood delivers direct, measurable environmental and wildlife benefits. It’s one of those deceptively simple acts that quietly protects ecosystems, prevents harm, and strengthens the health of local green spaces. The evidence is clear across multiple environmental studies and conservation organisations.

In summary:

Regular litter picking in Downswood

• Protects wildlife from ingestion, entanglement, injury, and death
• Prevents soil and water contamination
• Reduces plastic and chemical pollution
• Improves habitat quality for birds, mammals, insects, and plants
• Supports long‑term ecological resilience
• Builds a culture of environmental care
