Busting the Myths
6th May 2025
We would like to address and correct some recent misinformation being circulated on social media concerning the forthcoming Downswood By-election, which will take place this Thursday.
By-elections are formally managed by Maidstone Borough Council, not the Parish Council. However, the financial responsibility for these elections is recharged to the Parish Council. These costs can be significant, and with a strong commitment to responsible stewardship of public funds, a decision was made not to issue Polling Cards. Doing so would have added approximately £2,000 to the overall cost—money that could be better spent on essential local services.
Contrary to some claims, there has been no attempt to conduct this election quietly or to suppress voter turnout. The by-election has been properly and publicly advertised on the Downswood Parish Council website, its social media platforms, community noticeboards, and various other online forums.
To vote, just take along some form of ID such as a Passport etc. We urge all residents to take part in this important democratic process. Your voice matters—please vote on Thursday.
