Community Corner

Welcome to our Community Corner page!  This is a page where any local events can be advertised free of charge - just let us know, well before the event, and we’ll advertise it here.  Most events in Downswood happen at the Community Centre, but this is certainly not always the case and things often go on slightly further afield.  If you’re looking for somewhere to go or want to know what sort of thing happens in and around Downswood then this is the place to look.

St Nicholas’ Church

Rev Andrew Sewell’s last day in the Parish will be Sunday 25 June 2010, as published in the Two Spires magazine recently.  After this date, Rev David Bond will be the main point of contact for weddings, baptisms and funerals - he can be contacted on 01622 202239.

St Mary’s Church at Langley is having a Treasure Hunt on Saturday 11 September between 10am and 4pm.  There will also be various stalls to look round - for more details please call Anne on 07812573628.

Madginford WI members were entertained by dry humoured Kentish born author Chris McCooey.  His talk featured both little known and the famous from one of his books entitled 'Kent Characters - Wacky, Weird and Wonderful'.  One such, former owner of Mote House set in 500 acres, Jewish Lord Mayor of London, Sir Marcus Samuel. He levelled the cricket ground.  His childhood collection of Margate sea shells used to decorate Victorian object d'art, led to importation of more shells and the naming of one of the global companies - Shell.  Another was one of the first female GPs, a great shot, parttime anaesthetist, unconventional and forthright, Dr Dorrit Waterfield of Lamberhurst and Pembury. Placenta of newborn she used as tomato fertilizer.  She cared for alcoholics/ Mattress on roof she drove to work in the London blitz.  Chris acknowledged research notes of his friend and fellow writer Bowen Pearse.

The Bearsted & Thurnham Fayre stall was a resounding success. Members who worked as a happy team were thanked.  The Fayre's 2010 charity is the house in Egremont Road, Bearsted for Alzheimer patients giving respite for their carers.

Val Linford was welcomed as a new committee member.

An August social event will be held in a member's garden for beetle drive, and ploughman's supper.

The next formal meeting is on Thursday 9 September at 8.00pm in Madginford Hall, Egremont Road, Bearsted.  The subject will be 'Pearls' by Christine Everidge.    Visitors and new members will be welcomed - just turn up or Tel:  01622 738455 / 753514 / 861725.
